two posts in one day?!
Crazy, I know, but my friend just sent me this silly internet game, and I loved it so I had to share.
Instructions--Google the phrase "(your name) needs" and record the first ten results you find, or more if you can find good ones.
1. Sasha needs a cocktail.
2. Sasha needs attention. Always wanting a free belly rub.
3. Sasha needs everyone's help.
4. Sasha needs more minutes.
5. Sasha needs a good home.
6. Sasha needs to FLASHA the CASHA!
7. Sasha needs an international passport--she got it. Needs police report--she got it. Needs to get it soon--she got it in plenty of time.
8. Sasha needs to undergo planned examinations once every two months.
9. Sasha needs to dump that pump fake and hangin' the ball down low.
10. Sasha needs to see a real love story.
11. Sasha needs...she has.
Aww, how perfect are the last two?! Love it.
And no, I have no idea what "flasha the casha" means.

the belated new year's post
I mentioned before that I tend not to believe in New Year's resolutions, but that this year's circumstances warranted new beginnings in many areas of my life. That in mind, I did make some resolutions, and I would like to share them.
1. Make time for me. Take care of myself. Two things to which I have never devoted myself in my whole life. I have always been an incredibly driven, committed, responsible person, and I devote myself to my friends, family, and my endeavors tirelessly. But in the midst of taking care of everyone and everything else in my life, my own well-being has frequently gone untended. This year, I vow to change that. Of course I will still take care of my loved ones and my pursuits, but I'm making myself someone worthy of care when I need it as well.
2. Lose 15 pounds. Sounds shallow, but I have legitimate reasons. Just trust me.
3. Eat more and more often. I know, I know, this usually results in an opposite reaction to the desired one mentioned above, but not in my case. On average, I eat about 850-900 calories a day, and I can go up to 8 hours in between snacks or meals--old habit left over from my days of hardcore ballet, hardcore conservatory studies and hardcore academics. I have always been able to get by without feeling hungry on that much, and when I get really busy, I just don't think about eating. It's low on my priority list most of the time. But in the interest of continuing to maintain a healthy, active, energetic lifestyle, this is something that needs to happen. The doctor says it should help with the weight too, interestingly enough.
4. Spend more time with photography. As much time as I spend now, it is never, never, never enough. I want to do this every day forever. It's like my therapy.
5. Spend more time with family and good friends. There is nothing more important in the world, and I've been feeling the need to spend less time with trivial, transitive things and more time with the things that are really meaningful in this life.
6. Be more adventurous, take healthy risks, try everything once. Every day is a special occasion, don't postpone life.
7. Show people who I am, and show them how important they are, how worthy, how loved. There is never any reason to treat anyone with disrespect or disinterest, and I am devoting my energy to a relentless philosophy of passion and compassion.

8. Oh, and stop doing that weird thing I do with my teeth. Enough said.

chicagoland adventures--brittany and nick engagement preview
I met up again with Brittany and Nick this past weekend for our second installment of the engagement shoot photo-extravaganza. We had planned on going to a few locations, including the beach to get a really good city view shot so they can show their friends and family the city. Little did we know that we picked literally the snowiest day of the year so far, so we couldn't even vaguely see the city, the beach was frozen, the wind was blowing quite violently, and with 10 inches of snow on the ground and more falling, it was absolutely frigid. However, Brit and Nick are such troopers! They were all up for tromping around on the snowy beach even if we could just get a couple of good shots. And because they are such a naturally beautiful, loving couple, OF COURSE we did!!! Here are just a few previews of the exciting, most snowy day we had. Thank you and enjoy, guys!

the best things in life are free
Have you ever had one of those days when you can literally feel your worries, fears and problems grind to a halt, even if only for a few minutes? Today I am experiencing the rare pleasure of having the afternoon off from school, work and production. I know, it's hard to believe that I could really have nothing to do this afternoon, nowhere particular to be, but it's the amazing, unprecedented truth!
Lounging in my apartment, enjoying hot, almond-flavored Intelligentsia coffee and grapefruit (I swear it's actually a good combination, despite how it sounds), mindless entertainment on the TV screen (I missed on-demand the last three weeks for SURE!), huge light, fluffy snowflakes drifting past my windows and amazingly pure, clean, white winter light streaming through my blinds, today is turning out to be a much-needed breath of fresh air at the end of what always turns out to be a difficult-to-readjust-to-being-back-in-the-swing-of-things first week of winter term.
I don't generally make New Years' resolutions because I believe that each day is new, a fresh opportunity to start whatever change we need to make for ourselves, our families or, as we say in my family unit, our "boulders and big rocks." However, this New Year has occurred with rather poignant enough timing that I gave myself leeway to make a resolution--Starting now, for the first time in my life, and definitely not the last, I resolve to take care of myself. Whether that means taking a lighter class load, removing myself from the presence of toxic situations, or taking the afternoon off for movies, coffee, grapefruit, and vegging on the couch to edit photos, I am already reaping the benefits of taking care of myself, and I suggest everyone else do the same.
Take an afternoon off, try a soy mocha with almond flavoring (DEFINITELY Intelligentsia coffee if you're in the Chicago area--it's the best) accompanied by the rubiest red grapefruit you can find, allow yourself to really "do nothing," or do something else that you love and in which you don't frequently find yourself indulging. Put Your Feet UP! Take a break!--I guarantee each and every one of you deserves it!!!

Exciting News--
The most exciting news yet!!!
My brand new website is officially LIVE!!!
It's listed on the side over there -->, but just in case, the URL is
http://birdsflyphotography.com
Please take a moment to go check it out, and feel free to let me know what you think there or here. I love comments! :)
P.S. Stay tuned for a new, bigger and better blog. This one is...well...limited and frustrating, to say the least. My photos are aggravatingly small, yet still fuzzy and hard to see. For those of you who may be more savvy of blogs than I clearly am--is there any way to fix that and customize the site a little bit more? Or should I just spring for a paid site? Any input is appreciated! Thanks!
P.P.S. From what I can tell, the email on my site is still a little wonky while the site is being fully propagated, so if you send me something from the contact sheet and I don't reply, I promise I'm not ignoring or neglecting you, I just haven't received your note yet. I'll get back to you as soon as possible!

Use it now.
Today I spent some long overdue and much needed quality time with my dear, dear friend Sarah. We have been planning to take some fun friend portraits for almost a year now, I think, and we finally got around to starting today. Little did we know when we planned on shooting today that the weather would be absolutely beautiful (almost 60 degrees in January!!!), the light would be perfect, and just about everything would work out the best it possibly could.
My mom sent me a New Year's email this morning that resonated with a lot of the struggles I've been having in my life lately, and while I'm not in a place to adopt all of the positivity of the letter, one piece in particular was quite applicable to my day with my gorgeous friend: Use it now.
It seems in this life, we find ourselves frequently using the phrase, "I'm saving it for a special occasion." In 2009, let us instead find ourselves realizing that every single day we are blessed with being alive is a special occasion. Let us never forget that life itself is a special occasion, that those we love are the most important things in our lives, and that there is something beautiful to be seen, heard, smelled, touched, tasted everywhere, everyday. Let me never forget.
